Ha! This is clearly not my photo, but it does give me an excuse to share some cool stuff.

Skywalker Sound has put together a very cool compilation video of the solid rocket booster perspective from launch to splash down. Make sure to watch full screen.

I will be going to the Kennedy Space Center to crawl throughout the Shuttle Endeavour as she is powered up for the very last time. That should be an amazing experience. I last got some cool night photos of Endeavour for STS-118.

This time, we will be taking 3D video and 360° Quicktime VR (I need to work on the rig for that). The final output, post processing, should look like this VR view of Discovery.

Then I’ll see the SpaceX Falcon9 launch to the ISS…. From one generation to the next.

Last night, 60 Minutes ran a profile on SpaceX.

  1. I caught the SRB separation with my ground camera on STS-118… and the bottom of Atlantis, pre-sponsorship =)

  2. Oh wow I had no idea SpaceX was going to ISS so soon. Awesome!

  3. The Skywalker Sound compilation was totally awesome–thanks. Loved the condensation effects at maxQ.

  4. That video was incredible, sharing it with everyone I know. The idea that humanity is capable of such feats is truly awe inspiring. We need to keep pushing the limits.

  5. The guy who invented Red Bull, Chaleo Yoovidhya, just died last week.

  6. @Steve Jurvetson This *is* really getting exciting. I need to tour SpaceX and shoot some photos to rival my Rockwell shuttle tour I did in 1982.

  7. Steve, what equipment are you using to capture the 3D video? (Phil at USC film school’s 3D Lab)

  8. By buddy David is doing that part and he’ll have:
    · Pair of Panasonic HDC-SD800K 1080P/60FPS camcorders and “scorpion mount” to achieve stereoscopic distance
    · Pair of Sony 1080P/30 camcorders / same mounting
Plus some human talent from Cameron Pace. (priceless! =)

I am working on the 360° pano and would welcome recommendations. I am considering the everyscape walk through format, providing connectivity between spaces
