From the Waikoloa Petroglyph Field, Hawai’I, 1400 – 1800 A.D.

“Maybe they were playing hangman” a young girl was heard to say.

After the missionaries arrived, the carvings became deeper (shifting from rock to metal tools) and the figures morphed from skinny sticks to big belly men.

  4. Petroglyphs provide a fascinating glimpse into human history. Interesting that our first records of history should be a form of graffiti! But then, if it were not for these petroglyphs we might barely know that these people even existed. For all we know, they may even have greater sustainability than the digital records we are leaving today!
