Separated DNA from a strawberry today.

Here, strings of DNA precipitate up into the propanol and clump together.

The strawberry cell walls were dissolved in an earlier detergent rinse.

  1. I Must Say This Is Very Well Done. Congratulations. Very Important To Separate These. Good Work

  2. heh… =)

    You gotta keep ’em separated

  3. at the risk of getting my numbers wrong, but in the interest of illuminating "scale": each strawberry cell’s dna strand ~ ten angstroms wide, ~ 1 meter long, ~800 mega bases (if i remember plant genome size correctly)…coiled up inside a nucleus between 3 and 10 micrometers wide, being transcoded in parallel at between 100 and several thousand locations depending on what operation the cell is performing…several billion cells. That strawberry is on the order of a billion-billion bases running probably in excess of a trillion ops per second while its alive…one heck of a chemical-super-computer. A la mode please.

  4. how exciting. i don’t get by your photostream enough!

[Re: "That poster photo was clearly posted as "private" for you… The flickr framework extends to meat space you know… " I’ve got to say that that’s one of the best meta-flickr-quips i’ve seen. very funny! oh yeah… the shot of the model has to be copyright by somebody so it’s even a better joke than i first thought.]

  5. Now separated the DNA from the whipped cream and the shortcake.

  6. I’ll take the DNA, but can you separate the calories from the fruit without losing the taste?

  7. Interesting picture! Thanks for making it CCL, I’ve blogged it here.. earthpages.wordpress.com/2009/06/11/scientism/
