
With Jeff Bezos sitting next to us in the audience, she relayed the story of how Van Jones and José Andrés (founder of World Central Kitchen) received the news that after his rocket flight, Jeff would present each of them with $100 million as the first recipients of the Bezos Courage and Civility Award.
She then sat with the two of them for a fireside chat.
José Andrés: “Ukraine feeds 500 million people. Because of the war, Africa will go into an unprecedented famine in one to two years.”
“We have served 210 million meals in Ukraine.”
Van Jones: “Don’t let the battleground obscure the common ground. I have learned that we do a disservice in the cable news. We were convinced of something that is not true. There are not so many awful people in the country. There are a few awful people, but they are the least of our problems. There are so many awesome people who are silent, who don’t know what to do. I did not know that when I was younger. I was left of Pluto. I was considered a radical activist in the Bay Area. You have to work hard and work weekends for that!”
