53 years ago today, Buzz Aldrin placed a “goodwill disc” on the moon with miniaturized letters from the world’s heads of state (their letters and faxes were transferred to a polysilicon thin-film deposition on a silicon wafer, visible to the eye).

These invited letters included submissions from the Pope, Indira Gandhi, Queen Elizabeth II and… the U.S. consul leaders of the Baltic States which were brutally occupied by the Soviet Union at the time, as East Ukraine is today. In both cases, the U.S. did not recognize the illegal occupation by the ever-evil empire.

History rhymes. I shared the prototype and story with Estonian TV.

Estonia’s Apollo 1969 message: “The people of Estonia join those who hope and work for freedom and a better world.”

  2. I am afraid that the Baltic states are next for Russian aggression. That, of course, may be true if the current regime can actually defeat Ukraine. The current situation has revealed a lot about the weaknesses that have been hidden for so long. Do not be surprised if the Chinese decide to take advantage of the situation.
