53 years ago today, Buzz Aldrin placed a “goodwill disc” on the moon with miniaturized letters from the world’s heads of state (their letters and faxes were transferred to a polysilicon thin-film deposition on a silicon wafer, visible to the eye). These invited letters included submissions from the Pope, Indira Gandhi, Queen Elizabeth II and… the U.S. consul leaders of the Baltic States which were brutally occupied by the Soviet Union at the time, as East Ukraine is today. In both cases, the U.S. did not recognize the illegal occupation by the ever-evil empire.
