Inside the Giant Binoculars today, home of the Google Quantum AI Lab.
The building was designed by Frank Gehry and the binoculars by artist Claes Oldenburg. We met inside the right barrel, and it opens up to the sky; I suggested they add convex mirrors to enlarge a spot of the night sky.
And I was impressed by the pace of progress in their gate model quantum computers. I can’t disclose the details, but let’s just say that for 2019, the doubling time of computational-equivalent-progress is measured not in years… or months… but days! [I am guessing this is more of a short term calibration effect than a sustainable variant on Moore’s / Rose’s Law]
