All Tesla Patents are now open source. The perfect summary: “Technology leadership is not defined by patents, which history has repeatedly shown to be small protection indeed against a determined competitor, but rather by the ability of a company to attract and motivate the world’s most talented engineers.” (Tesla Blog)
The capacity to innovate is more important than any one innovation. Engineers >> Patents

  1. This is just amazing. Thank you on behalf of the many generations to come that could benefit from eliminating hydrocarbon fuels. Just imagine electric cars charged by solar energy the future is brighter thanks to you guys, let’s hope everybody else follows.

  2. a fun remix from Facebook… Patent Wall Remix I pinged a patent law professor about this post, and his reply was interesting (shared anonymously here with permission): "Yes, it has caused a flurry in the patent bar, as you might imagine. And I had lunch with an in-house IP counsel at a company who said he had 64 emails this morning from engineers at his company saying "why can’t we do that?" Good for Elon."

P.S. Nikola would be proud… How it all started... the Nikola Tesla patent on the alternating motor - no brushes or rare Earth magnets needed “Let the future tell the truth, and evaluate each one according to his work and accomplishments. The present is theirs; the future, for which I have really worked, is mine.”

  3. A bold an unexpected intervention in the "IP-space". There is always more value out of open communication. One never knows as much as all the others around, and vice versa.

Congrats to Elon and this amazing step!!!

  4. In one way I understand the need for patents but in another way we all know teamwork is the best way to boost the success and if everyone can build upon technology the that is for free, then it would result in faster progress and thrive in diversity of future developments founding on such free technologies.
I find it great and brave for a small company such as Tesla compared to other OEMs which still don’t go the full step to EV and only do small steps with very few of their car models to have them as a hybrid.
Great work, keep doing this and you will be paving a new "road".

  5. Wow. ditto Ralf above. "bold and unexpected" indeed!

  6. There should exist an obvious and clear path for innovators ability to invent or create advantageous products or services and be compensated for their creativity. The successful formula would most likely be a similar method as current day patenting but should continuously focus on creating easier pathways drawing more interest and notoriety to those contributors resulting in more participation. Once participation is rampant the creativity and genius American minds that have been hidden for years will be provided an opportunity to be productive in an effective way. It has to be apparent to everyone the dire necessity that exists from the social and cultural decline of generations of selfish, self-serving wealthy citizens with such little contribution to society that American’s find themselves in the back of the line or at least second-rate in Technology, Economy, Education and so on. If anyone wonders why it is the responsibility of the wealthy class to carry the burden, then they simply do not understand how the world functions. It is those very individuals that have provided the damning evidence making capitalism and democracy a target for most radical’s. "The Golden Rule" – he who has the gold; rules – is an understatement but is suffice.

  7. The decision by Elon allowing other company’s to utilize their patented products without the cost of Royalties is exactly what is needed. Its sets an example of what America, as a whole, should be prepared to do for our younger and upcoming generations to succeed and the ability to at least compete for products in demand for trade, import and/or export. We have already shown, as a society, it will continue to purchase superior products even if it means monetary contributions to other country’s economy. It is our Country’s Wealthiest citizens that can afford these types of opinions and purchases and those decisions are made with very little forethought regarding the long-term implications placed on our kids, grandkids and younger generations. This Class of Wealthy individuals, will likely be the ones on the Boards, in the CEO, Presidents positions of influential organizations that can and should make choices favorable to American’s ability to compete now and more-so in the future. If not, it certainly projects an appearance of selfish, self-serving attitudes, especially to those ready to place judgement. That is how the burden landed on them in the first place.

  8. Really revolutionary. Look forward to an affordable Tesla that is going to have a license plate "OPEN SRC".

  9. and the same wall today…
