Light meter adjusting for the blinding whiteness of the snow probably caused the effect… Light meters are based on a "neutral gray", which corresponds roughly to Caucasian skin tone. An "old fashioned" photographer would have probably opened up a couple of F-stops to make the snow a true white. Digital photography has much, much more exposure latitude than old emulsions did, this picture probably wouldn’t have turned out so well with Kodachrome.
