In pure darkness, we took this shot without flash, using light dodging from Kindle and iPhone.

Photo sequence below… and cultural context on na iwi kupuna from the state of Hawai’i.

  1. first discovery of the tube… the boys noticed an entrance while golfing, and emerged about 100 ft. away,
    popping up like whack-a-moles:

We went back the next day with the ladies

And then, my son and I were itching to see where it might lead…on another visit… We dropped down:

    And found multiple tunnel networks

    and animal bones

Including multiple jawbones (so it’s not one animal that perished here)

This was one of the tricky parts…

I squeezed as far I could over the smooth rock, until my back hit the sharp roof… and then stuck my camera into the dark… he proceeded by Kindle light

and then we found the human skull. It was a solemn moment. We carefully removed ourselves from the scene, trying not to disturb anything.

  2. Fascinating. Beautiful bone bed.
From the angle of the presented skull it is difficult to see much detail (with the understanding you were offering full respect to the entombed). Parieto-temporal sutures seem obliterated. Brow isn’t very pronounced. Female, adult (late mid-aged) ??
    Incredible adventure.

  3. Wow, that is awesome! You might want to see if this site has been studied, it looks like there is an artifact just under the skull that is still there, which is rare. Many burial sites have been looted and disrupted over the years.

  4. Are you wearing a hat of Indiana Jones?

  5. Sent you an e.mail (at your job I think). I hope you like the result. I surely loved doing it.

  6. Nice father/son adventure! I’ll bet your son will remember this as a moment of his childhood.

  7. I’m 100% non-claustrophobic…until the section deep into a traverse where someone says "now squeeze through as far as you can."

Using a phone or tablet screen as a light panel is one of my favorite tricks.

  8. Probably another tourist like yourselves from, say, the 1920s, who zigged when she should have zagged.

"Did you hear that aunt Maggie went golfing in Hawaii last Christmas and was never seen again?"
