We were driving to HMB today, and looking at the Google satellite view, we noticed a cool quarry nestled up in the adjacent hills, so we had to sneak in and take a drive around the operation. If you have a big screen, stretch the window full width…

  2. Wow beautiful results coming out of a phone. Very surprised I am….and I do have a very large screen. Splendid image.

  3. I think part of the magic comes from the 6-axis accelerometer. It can detect the slightest movement of the angle of the camera and auto-stitch a single frame from what seems to be a video feed coupled to movement.

Oh, I should mention that these quarries take on a certain beauty to photographers like Ed Burtynsky who draw you in with their immense sense of scale. Here are some of my favorites:

  4. Burtynsky is great and this is right in same vein. There’s a great quarry at the eastern foot of the Dumbarton Bridge as well that you can actually bike to. It’s almost vertigo inducing.

  5. I’ve seen that quarry from the air and thought, "How can they let that thing operate so in/near a watershed feeding one of San Francisco’s main reservoirs…sigh.

  6. Here is a big one I "found" near San Jose, with similar issues…

    Meteor Crater in Silicon Valley?

and a citizen citizen reaction about it…
