The sign language lady did not yet realize that there was a shark swimming up in the air behind her…

From TEDxStanford today: Blake English, the design student and creator explained that his inspiration came from a 5 ft. long prototype that sent a girl in his dorm running off screaming. “That’s all the inspiration that I needed.”

Here’s a video of the shark going right over our heads, and more photos below.

    We know each other from the same undergrad dorm, but we never knew that we are both squid-o-philes until he introduced the following speaker, William Gilly…

    After describing their amazing plasticity of body form, diet, migratory patterns and behaviors, he concluded:

    "You are going to see a lot more of them. Squid are the perfect design for surviving climate change, They are like the natural history version of Bain Capital."

    There are a number of companies that have been experimenting with bouyant craft emulating such things as fish, penguins, and even the sting ray.

    Festo, a pneumatics company in Germany, has done or sponsored much work.

    The Stringray project was developed and test flown by Prospective Concepts in Switzerland.
