As the end of the launch waiver approached, and the sun began to set, we rushed to set up the launch rail and prepare my 12 ft.-tall rocket for her maiden launch.

We armed the electronics and confirmed GPS lock with two wireless base stations. Then came the announcement to the flight line, and the inevitable butterflies during the countdown…

And then, a throaty roar into the sky and a cone of light… 70 ft. tall at this point, and growing… a delightful display to close the Saturday launches at BALLS.

More launch photos below. And here’s a video compilation (HD).

  2. Not this time… There was a surprising amount of last-minute prep to get this bird on the rail, and we started driving the rail and rocket out with 20 minutes left on the waiver.

P.S. for those who did not see the earlier posts, this gives a sense of scale…

Matrix in the matrix by PhotonQThe Matrix in the Matrix is thanks to PhotonQ in Paris. I was thinking of other rocket names, such as: The Red Pill, Splinter in your Mind, Trinity Test or Déjà Vu.

  3. Superbe Feu !!!
Something cool I was telling Todd, would be to have DIY Drones filming the launch too =). Have you seen this video made at Burning Man from a Drone ?

  4. Beautiful tail like Comet Halley.

  7. Wow! Amazing! Was this launch during sunset? 🙂

  8. Yes, making for long shadows and magical lighting.

  9. congrats 🙂
    perfect!

  10. Steve, you’ve taken a lot of great pictures (your picts of the Blades of Death CATO at Snow Ranch grace my desktop), but these take my breath away.

  11. Certainly a great way to end the day, it was a spectacular launch. That shower of sparks looked longer than 70′ from where I was standing, either way it was great.

  12. The Wiz Kid of Riverton is clearly alive and well 😉
