Just got the frame and drivetrain built for this dual-motor LEGO EV. Differential gear traction control, AWD, full-suspension, four-wheel steering, and the climbing torque of an EV… which has a fine lineage, from the sixteen-motor crawler for the Saturn V to the Lunar Rovers, to Curiosity (and all of the Mars rovers), to the gonzo Model X.

More photos below… and here’s a short video of its climbing skills.

Drive train… central motor is for 4-wheel steering. Each axle has an electric motor and differential gear:

  2. The cat was waiting to get warmed by the onboard alpha particle spectrometer

  3. Yeah, it’s a big rock. Good for suspension testing. Took the LEGO Mars rover photo there too.

Spaceaholic: of the rover tools, it’s the frickin’ laser they fear. They always suspected that Curiosity kills the cat.

  4. That’s pretty cool.
Have you made the sky hook landing system from LEGO too?
So, if the front and rear axles share a steering motor, they can’t be turned independently?
