His facial scratches are from competitive fighting with fellow lions in the pride over small kills, like impala.

(untouched photo straight from the camera, so rare for me now given the ease of iPhoto, but there was nothing I wanted to tweak here)

  1. Another great shot in your African saga…

  2. "untouched… given the ease of iPhoto…"
    Right!??!?!
kudos Steve, on an absolutely fabulous snap!

  3. Actually he looks in pretty good shape – a bit moth-eaten perhaps, but no recent wounds or scratches deep enough to suppurate or attract flies. A handsome fellow indeed, probably quite the ladies man…

  4. It looks like a real lion in front of me, not a photo.

  5. "Stand your ground Sao and look big" – lesson from TED

Also, if you missed it earlier, I posted other lions eating a buffalo, cuddling at night, and leopards going through a mating dance / fight in Botswana and another walking by close enough to touch in South Africa.

P.S. I have not pulled my lion videos together yet, but here’s an amazing lion ambush video in Kruger if you have not seen it. Quite dramatic, but with a happy ending. =)

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/jitze1942] – you have no idea… he has a posse of 22 lions… never seen so many in one place… photos to come.

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/praxis69] – thanks… and yes, no edits whatsoever to this photo

  6. Appears pensive! One of these days you’ll have to let me know who you booked through. I have to make this trip eventually!

  7. Thank you!!!
Watched John Kasaona’s TED talk and the ambush video. Like both, happy tone in the former, and happy ending in the latter. Life is not fragile at Kruger. Thanks for the links to your earlier photos. Amazing collections! Rival John Kasaona’s.
If interested, there is a video of "Little Girl Shows Lion Who’s Boss" at a New Zealand zoo.

A lot of courage for a city adult to stand his/her ground and look big in front of the Lion King in the wilderness.

  8. Oh, his eyes are killing me. They are so soft, but I know he could take down big game in a heartbeat.
