Two new sets of fun photos arrived today – this peek-a-boo one from the dock, and a cool surprise from the astronaut (below).

  1. A photo and STS-120 mission patch from astronaut adventurer Scott Parazynski

to complement the earlier photo set and video (my camera was running as I entered, above)

Oh, and fun to compare to an entirely different kind of experimental sub design

  2. Their web site says 7 tons, 3 knots max, 936 feet (test?) depth, 12 hp total in three-axis thrusters. Doesn’t say but I assume it’s strictly storage battery. 72 hours life support endurance, which is pretty impressive. I assume you wouldn’t want to actually be down that long. Does it have a head?

I’ve been on a few military subs but the only time I went for a dive was the tourist sub in Cozumel. And of course Disneyland, but I suspect that one never actually goes below the surface.

  3. At first, I didn’t notice the creature in the top photo.

  4. love yellow submarine too since childhood:) probably was the very first song learned in English…nice portraits here:)

  5. Ahhh! That is so great!

  6. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/83025347@N00] – no head. The 72-hour oxygen backup is in case of an emergency. The crew are all told to watch the BBC documentary of the Russian sub AS-28 that had to wait 76 hours before a rescue.

P.S. just noticed that the next Deepflight winged design, Challenger, is the only sub that can go to 36,000 ft.

And they plan to go to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

  7. Hey, I’ve been in a yellow submarine, too! No astronauts and no Steve in there, though.

  8. I think with a little cropping and levels manipulation, you have a new profile photo here (peeping through the submarine hatch).

  9. Good lord, a veteran of 5 shuttle missions, nearly 50 hours EVA time, summited Mt. Everest, and a doctor (most people would be happy with just the last one!!). Some people really are driven to achieve. Certainly an inspirational person for your son to meet.
