Their web site says 7 tons, 3 knots max, 936 feet (test?) depth, 12 hp total in three-axis thrusters. Doesn’t say but I assume it’s strictly storage battery. 72 hours life support endurance, which is pretty impressive. I assume you wouldn’t want to actually be down that long. Does it have a head?
I’ve been on a few military subs but the only time I went for a dive was the tourist sub in Cozumel. And of course Disneyland, but I suspect that one never actually goes below the surface.
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/83025347@N00] – no head. The 72-hour oxygen backup is in case of an emergency. The crew are all told to watch the BBC documentary of the Russian sub AS-28 that had to wait 76 hours before a rescue.
P.S. just noticed that the next Deepflight winged design, Challenger, is the only sub that can go to 36,000 ft.
And they plan to go to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
Good lord, a veteran of 5 shuttle missions, nearly 50 hours EVA time, summited Mt. Everest, and a doctor (most people would be happy with just the last one!!). Some people really are driven to achieve. Certainly an inspirational person for your son to meet.
