I spoke a few words of Finnish to put them at ease today. =)

Then they told me that our last interview was watched by the Finnish President. So I told them that my Estonian friends in Tallinn have never met a sober Finn (given the sample selection bias of the vodka ferries)

Would have been too much to ask them how Finland’s annual wife carry championships are working out for them?

  4. It’s interesting they used a consumer camcorder (plus bracket and LED light). I suppose the days of giant TV broadcast cameras are numbered, even for HD.

  8. Yeah swamp football and wife-carrying are just minor curiosities. Sauna is what’s important. And summer cottages.

  9. The prestigious 2011 North American Wife Carrying Championships will be held this Saturday October 8, at Sunday River, Maine.

The origin of North American Wife Carrying Championship is based in Finnish history. A notorious 19th century character, Rankainen the Robber, imposed strong physical standards on the men he considered for his band. To qualify, the men had to complete a difficult course with a heavy sack on their backs. It was also not uncommon for men to steal women from neighboring villages and use them in place of said sacks. The concept is a little archaic – but the modernized wife carrying event is all in fun, and in reality, is a true test of physical strength, agility and teamwork between man and woman. Registration for this year’s event is now closed.

On a personal note, I just had a total hip replacement procedure so upon advice of my doctor, I will have to wait till next year to enter.

The event will be covered by the BBC-TV from England, a radio station in Spain, the New England Sports Network, Runners World, ESPN, Good Morning America and Dateline NBC.
