On our first visit, we drove directly underneath this young male in the jackal berry tree, as he was lit by setting sun.

We did not hear a thing, but all of a sudden, he springs awake and stares. A young female leopard is slinking through the grass.

He is guarding a large buffalo kill, and not in a sharing mood. At three years old, he is too young to mate and protects the meal instead to grow stronger.

  2. Not as large as lions but to me leopards have always seemed the most impressive. Just to be clear this was a Cape Buffalo kill he was guarding? That’s an incredible kill for a leopard. Very nice shots!

  3. In Kenya a commonly held maxim is, "Better to meet a lion than a leopard." I’m jealous of your exposure to the leopard. I lived in East Africa for three and half years and only actually saw one once, from a great distance.

  4. Yes, the full-size cape buffalo probably died of natural causes as he’s too big for a leopard to kill. Probably a 2-day old kill, and they last for four. They eat all the organ meats, and air out the chest cavity so it lasts longer.

The big cats sleep a lot…. The was the scene just before she arrived…

  5. Wow, sweet big kitty.. incredibly beautiful! how come humans can get this close? Wonder what they smell like? They probably lick themselves like kittens:) would be fun to see them play if they are not in a mood to mate. All big and small cats play similar, probably.

  6. All those kitten photos were good practice for these!!!

  7. Great captures !
    Thank you for sharing.
