The onboard videocam caught the critical moment of synchronized ignition: three lit motors at the tips, and the red igniter retainer popping off the central motor.

My son’s scratch-built rocket had a perfect flight, and boy was it complex: Four motors. RF tracking. Redundant computer and delay-grain parachute ejection events. Data logging HCX computer that ignites the central motor right after takeoff.

This was our third attempt to get all four motors to ignite, which is particularly difficult as the 54mm CTI “Long-Burn Red Lighting” motor in the center is very different from the three Aerotech MetalStorm motors on the fin tips. Prior attempts involved hold down clamps to try to assure that a lopsided motor configuration wouldn’t send the rocket off the rail like a crazy train.

Using the flight computer to light the one odd motor worked beautifully. Screen grab sequence below.

And here’s the video from ground and camera on rocket. Make sure the sound is up. Who knew she became a screaming banshee taking a thrill ride….

  2. Are you going to the STS-134 launch?

  3. Holy crap – these things go HIGH! Brilliant!!

  4. cool! what kind of onboard vid-camera are you using?

  5. Thanks!

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/79289632@N00] – No, but I did see Endeavour on STS-118 and Atlantis up close. She was beautiful at night. I do plan to go to the next Falcon9 launch though…

By coincidence, SpaceX announced the world’s biggest rocket today, and it’s a cluster of 27 engines…

"Falcon Heavy will have more than twice the performance of the Space Shuttle or Delta IV Heavy, the next most powerful vehicle…

Just for perspective, 53 metric tons is more than the maximum take-off weight of a fully-loaded Boeing 737-200 with 136 passengers. In other words, Falcon Heavy can deliver the equivalent of an entire airline flight full of passengers, crew, luggage and fuel all the way to orbit." (video)

  6. What’s the thing that looks like the blade from a circular saw?

  7. Super video! Too much fun.
Yes, got the SpaceX memo today! BIG deal!!

  8. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/83025347@N00] – Good eye! That, my friend, is a blade from a circular saw! They use them for blast plates (cheap and easy way to get a circle of thick metal with a hole in the center. But you have to be careful when cranking on the lever arm underneath to lower the pad.

  9. That was very well done! My congrats to your son on his successful flight, Steve!

  10. Ah, I thought the blade was attached to the rocket to add extra excitement for those flights that go out of control.

  11. Ah, for that, a traditional battle axe does the trick!

Great news on Space X, congratulation! a cluster of 27 engines! – and 2+7=9:D

  13. this is seriously cool

    well done
