While we were busy preparing, filming and recovering the rocket, Erik Charlton and Martin Hall got some great photos (sequence below).

My son designed, simulated, and built this rocket from scratch. It has a cluster of four motors – one big one in the middle, and three others at the tip of each fin (giving it a wide stance and dramatic plume).

He needed huge, strong and light fins, and so he went with a honeycomb nomex composite. For the body, he used a blue tube upper and a slotted fiberglass lower section with aluminum boat tail. It has a radio transmitter for tracking. The HCX flight computer lights the central motor at launch detect, logs the flight performance and deploys the parachutes. He called it “Epic”.

Onboard video and frame grabs from the air (boost and recovery)

Silver vinyl flames and burning-font Epic. He wanted the tubes to be different colors.

And it roars out of sight to a cheering crowd… (and a wall of smoke)

  4. The kid in you is showing…wonderful series to have.

  5. yep, cool series all together… want a pretty rocket too… for my daughter:) killing us with cuteness:) oh, there are two Estonian noses:)

  6. wow – fantatic – wonderful, like it!!

  7. Thanks y’all… The last is my favorite too…

What a great day this was… started with Buzz Aldrin at NASA (more on that later) and then Obama called to catch up and praise the commercial space announcement by SpaceX today, which, appropriate to this thread, is a big cluster rocket with 27 engines, the world’s biggest rocket.

"Falcon Heavy will have more than twice the performance of the Space Shuttle or Delta IV Heavy, the next most powerful vehicle…

Just for perspective, 53 metric tons is more than the maximum take-off weight of a fully-loaded Boeing 737-200 with 136 passengers. In other words, Falcon Heavy can deliver the equivalent of an entire airline flight full of passengers, crew, luggage and fuel all the way to orbit." (video)

  8. Nice set of pictures, the video is amazing, and the Father Son time priceless!….

  9. Your son is a lucky kid to have a dad that still is so young at heart. He will treasure these moments.

  10. More fun than a single-motor one!

  11. Wow. Was that main photo manually triggered? Was it one of a "continuous shooting" set? Or does someone have remarkable reaction time? 😉
