While we were busy preparing, filming and recovering the rocket, Erik Charlton and Martin Hall got some great photos (sequence below).
My son designed, simulated, and built this rocket from scratch. It has a cluster of four motors – one big one in the middle, and three others at the tip of each fin (giving it a wide stance and dramatic plume).
He needed huge, strong and light fins, and so he went with a honeycomb nomex composite. For the body, he used a blue tube upper and a slotted fiberglass lower section with aluminum boat tail. It has a radio transmitter for tracking. The HCX flight computer lights the central motor at launch detect, logs the flight performance and deploys the parachutes. He called it “Epic”.
