Look at me, I’m in tatters!
I’m a shattered
Shattered

I finally pried apart the compressed hairball that was the avionics bay of my V-2 rocket after it came in ballistic, burying itself into the Black Rock Desert playa (photos).

Metal rods bent like spaghetti. Disemboweled Duracells. LCX circuit board components shaved clean off. A Jackson Pollock of circuitry.

The HCX flight computer sheared in half, and its SD card cage snapped off. But the data survived! I was amazed that the SD mini card recording the flight data survived the massive forces of hitting ground at about 500 MPH, like the black box on a plane. (In contrast, the microSD card inside a metal HD camera snapped in half.)

  1. That’s a fine piece of work and patience !

I was looking (vicariously !!) for the IMPACT on the video…
I guess that was not captured ?
I see it in still shots.
A shame..but your not playing marbles.

  2. all those bits and pieces make fun collages 🙂

  3. yeah – bleeeh!

    sunrizr…. beautiful! I should paint mine white…

    I accessorized this one…

  4. An Asterix "toc toc toc" to you all! 🙂

  5. I’m not that impressed. These cards have a history of being indestructible.

  6. it’s no wonder we moved to solid-state…
can u imagine trying to recover data from tape, or magnetic disks?

  7. Impressive save. Too bad the micro SD card didn’t survive. Probably would have been an interesting perspective. I look at this photo and one word comes to mind…..OUCH! All the glue and patience in the world couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty back together again! Gives new meaning to the term "disposable income".

  8. Steve, it’s gotta get you in the gut?? All the time and effort you spent on this thing!? All things considered, however, I guess it is to be expected and still better that you are not scraping the remains of one of the observers off the site!

  9. Yeah, I had great plans for her… and really wanted to recover the video…

Here’s what I was hoping to see overhead…

    Under Chute

Broken Toy Shop: trust me, the SD card is destructible when the camera strikes solid clay at supersonic speed and turns itself inside out. That’s a real drop test. =)

avlxyz: ironically, I think tape might be more reliable for ballistic data recovery… just my opinion from eight destroyed videocameras (Contour HD, Oregon Scientific ATC-2K, Boostervision, Estes Oracle =) Wireless transmission seemed like the obvious answer, but we kept losing the signal even with a directional antenna.

  10. Hi Steve, I sure appreciate your photographic and documenting skills. Aside from your great photographs, you have a wonderful way with words that helps tell the story behind the pictures. I stumbled on this picture and followed links to learn about the flight and "recovery". I sure hate to see this. As a fellow enthusiast, I have an understanding of the costs (financial and emotional) of a loss like this. One question, were you ever able to determine the cause of the failure? Things look pretty mangled but I’d guess you could tell if the charges fired etc. any ideas? I know it has been awhile since it was posted but I thought I’d ask anyhow.

  11. BP failed to ignite even though the e-matches from the redundant computers operated nominally. Perhaps hygroscopic deterioration of the BP? I have switched to CO2 deployment for the big projects.

  12. Hate that when it happens!!!!
