Just got back from a weekend of bursts and blasts.

This was my only mishap, but it made for an interesting photo. Paul and I drag raced identical cable spools. His performed as designed, deploying its parachute near the top of the frame.

My spool buckled under the thrust of an Aerotech Metalstorm motor, and went into a crazy spiral toward the launch line.. The LCO (launch control officer) and tent can be seen bottom right. No damage done, but it made me pucker (luckily I did not let go of the remote bulb trigger for the camera). There is some crazy detail in the spark periphery, which makes me want to print a poster size

It was a dark night, with just a crescent moon, and as a cherry to the evening, the ISS passed slowly overhead, inspiring us all.

  1. sorry…
    "drag raced a cable spool"…???

    Details please !!

  2. Whoops! I guess it wasn’t supposed to be a fireworks show? Still makes for a great photo.

  3. LOL….Nice photo! Rockets certainly seem to work a bit better. No rubber chickens?? I hear that politicians fly pretty well, although you can’t always tell what direction they are going to go!

  4. Houston we have a problem.

  5. dave – Sure…. here is what they normally do…. straight as an arrow, but not very aerodynamic…

    When Spools Fly

Dr DAD: following that line of thought, anything can fly with a big enough motor….

    Flying Crap

  6. Awesome bubble chamber spark trails! Face of dude in tent is melting a la Arc of Covenant Indiana Jones scene.

  7. OK…now I get it…
Saw something like that on an episode of "Dirty Jobs" once…
    (I recommend it…)

I think it was with recycled air bags…

  8. The flying porta-potty is both hilarious and nuts! Of course, as a gastroenterologist perhaps my humor is a little jaded. Consider that above our office coffee station is a little sign exclaiming "good to the last droppings"!

  9. thanks for clearing that up – similar inward tilt on the LCO 🙂 great detail on the uppermost spark… i smell a logo for a future brand… 😉

  10. I don’t know…..you may be on to something for July 4th! Those are some great spark flares!

  11. I was kinda hoping the spools would be unwinding cable as they went up.
I had envisaged a spool wound with LED strip that were powered, lifting into the sky.
