Just found this fellow slithering around the wine cellar. At nine inches long, I thought it was a snake at first.

Their similarity of movement reminded me that their backbones articulate left-to-right like fish, and unlike the up-down orientation for mammals, dolphins and dinosaurs.

  2. That looks like what we used to call an alligator lizard. Those and blue bellies were the typical targets of nor cal lizard catching youth.
