   Kinda looks like a Great Blue Heron. I saw a few on a trip to Costa Rica a couple years ago. Don’t think I saw the behavior you described, though.

   Sure looks like a heron; but there are Several Members of the Heron Family in Costa Rica.

   I doubt that it is a Great Blue Heron. I have seen many of them here in Oregon, but never saw one display the described behavior.

   Gorgeous example of male Anhingha bird (Latin name: Anhinga Anhinga) in full breeding plumage. It is sometimes known as the "Snake Bird" for obvious reasons. I have seen them as far north as Florida. Great photo Steve! Should send to Audobon…

   Definately an Anhinga, cant mistake that snake like build. Nice shot
