the dark water is quite deep and warmed by the sun… and quite peculiar…

biomass that sinks to the bottom is preserved from decomposing for centuries.

The Estonian children venture forth… like the Vikings before them that considered the mound in the distance a sacred (pagan) place.

  1. Your photo description sounds like poetry or the beginning of a great novel. Too bad you’re a VC and not a writer – good for us that there is Flickr

  2. How I Spent My Summer Vacation… I spent my vacation swimming across ancient swamps, and over mammoths and sabertooths hidden therein.

  3. Amazing places the swamps or moors (or soo or raba in Estonian) are. The vegetation that grows there is small, like 200 year-old miniature trees, due to the soil conditions. Also, the water is strangely pure, and can quench thirst.

Swamp turf is actually a success story in the exporting industry for Estonia.

  4. Great timing.

Takes me back to my own childhood, thanks 🙂

  5. What about the mosquitoes in this swamp? I was at a similar body of water in Finland many years ago – basically north of here – and in my naivete I figured it got too cold there in winter for mosquitoes to be able to survive (it was on the arctic circle)

Lemmetellya… bigger and more vicious than anything I ever encountered in Africa or in Minnesota… Being outdoors at dusk was sheer misery.

True.. yet, there’s always time for conversion, right? I would also add that he should take back his crayons and watercolors and give painting a chance. |-)

  7. jitze, it’s interesting to note that malaria killed a couple of million people over the 20th century in Russia. I suspect mosquitoes played a key role (not to mention Soviet era sanitation and health care). Most people assume things like malaria and mosquitoes kill almost exclusively in hot climates, which is factually far off the mark.
