and First Lady of Estonia… and a Watermill building full of fun people, like Carmen Kass.

I was still working on notes for my talk, where I drew an analogy between small startups with disruptive strategies and small countries with new economies… and the elements for success in competition with much larger, entrenched rivals. Here is the video of my talk.

  1. I hadn’t thought of "start-up countries". Very interesting analogy. The Eesti Pank (Estonia’s central bank) has lots of info on the economy and the operations of the bank. Very interesting reading.

I was thinking yesterday as I was reading about the Estonian economy how "new" countries are a product of their time. The newest version of Estonia came into being in the early 1990s at the collapse of the USSR. The leadership appears to have created a successful economy. It’s nice to see a successful political entity.

It is also interesting to note that the population of Estonia is only about 2/3 of the metro area of Portland, Oregon, where I live.

  2. It certainly does look like an enchanting evening. I am sure you enjoyed yourself. I hope you got your speech prepared at your satisfaction just in time to give it. It is quite an honour for you.

Did the First Lady smile most of the time?

  3. She doesn’t look happy here. Maybe the economy has got her down…

  4. I have noticed a pattern of grim poses for photos (making the one with Kass unusual), perhaps to convey seriousness…. Smiles abound off camera….

Regina – Oandu, 120km East of Tallinn. It is owned by the host, Margus Reinsalu (counsel to Morocco). A beautiful place, here are a couple photos I took:

  5. @jurvetson: do you speak the native language of the estonians? or was your talk in english and translated to the audience?

  6. She looks very stylish, I love the lighting.

  7. I had the privilege to film President Ilves and the first lady viewing the parrade of the Choir Song Festival in Tallinn. Is your talk summary available on line?

  8. They said they will send us a DVD with video and photos – will post if I get them…

.schtieF: No… but my parents do. I opened with: "You can tell from my thick accent that I did not grow up in Estonia. This probably sounds a lot like English."

  9. They just did a press release on the event:

with a metaphoto of my favorite supermodel. =)

They put a nice video montage together,
but it only has a snippet of my talk at the end.

  11. Thanks! It was a bit daunting to speak to such an august audience of Estonians. So I used a framework from my daily work, comparing startup companies to startup economies… Here is the video of my talk.
