Steve Eves preps the electronics package for his 1600 pound, 36 foot tall, 1/10 scale Saturn V rocket.

He flew a perfect flight on Saturday at MDRA setting a record for the largest successful hobbyist rocket launch; photos here and below by Neil McGilvray from Rockets Magazine, major supporters of the project.

She lifted off on a cluster of nine motors: a central P10000 surrounded by eight N3800s, all burning solid Loki White AP propellant.

  1. what altitude did the rocket reach?

  2. i’m ashamed to say i find that horizontal launch video priceless. Jamie (?) with the tash, beret and goggles is not someone i would want to bump into on a dark night.

  3. a nice touch that Eves’ monster landed and stayed upright!

  4. Great video. The chutes opening was almost as dramatic as the assent.

  5. Awesome launch! I can’t wait to see the Rocket Mavericks next big project!

  6. Holly cow! For the love of a hobby! Great project!

  7. Fantastic! And what a landing!!! Thanks for the links!!!

  8. Neat. And what they all said above…. The Taepo Dong isn’t much larger.. the TD does have a range advantage though, 50% of the time 😉

I could just picture me trying to tell my wife that I was going to do this….. =8-o But I guess I could use it as the lead in for a successful negotiation … maybe for a new camera…

  9. Reminds me of this great song:
