Straight from the can (just cropped). The noise level is not too bad.

  1. Nice details and colors, I just got a full-frame sensor Nikon and am amazed by its high ISO ability.

    Cheers and HNY.

  2. Damn that’s nice. Neat Image would have no problem cleaning that up.

  3. Just tried it, actually. It comes out a tad plasticky, but very good considering.

  4. "not too bad", he says…

was it quite a dull day when you took this? would be interesting to see how the 6400 on this translates to a handheld interior shot in low light / hot pixels etc.

  5. Yes, cloudy day and I was in the shade. I used a slow lens at f11 and added "sunglasses" (polarizing filter).

I shot a bird at dusk in the shade with the same setup, and it came out better. But I’m guessing the foliage texture masked the noise. The flat sheet of water was a noise palette for me here.

AMagill: The latest iPhoto has a built-in noise reduction slider. It does a magnificent job with this photo. I wanted to show the unprocessed image…. So the noise is not too bad in that I think it can be made fairly undetectable in post-processing…

  6. i found Noise Ninja to be the cleanest, most flexible app for NR, but interesting that iPhoto works well in this respect. does it now also have full rotation options (as in increments of 0.1 degree) – ?

i’ve mainly avoided it for the way it seems to easy to end up with mammoth libraries with multiple files that do not actually change the original filename. call me a reactionary – i keep better track of my pic archive when i organise everything in the finder and use PS…

  7. very nice at ISO6400!
nice ring around the stalk too… probably made by the meniscus 🙂

  8. If you’re serious about that 5D, get yourself Noiseware for noise removal, it does wonders! http://www.imagenomic.com/nwpg.aspx
My old 20D (8 Mpx) is limited to mostly ISO 200-800, 1600 is too lossy.

  9. biotron: I prefer NeatImage over Noise Ninja and that was learned from trying first one then the other to see which one worked best. Still, I keep both around as options.

I haven’t tried Noiseware, Tomi, but will check out your link.

Thanks for posting this test shot, I’m seriously loving my 5DII.
