Nick, a native Lana’i surfer, told us that the fish in many of the scuba spots are afraid of people because the areas are open to spear fishing. “The fish are smart.”

Here, in the Hulopo’e Bay, a protected marine preserve, schools of fish let you snorkel along with them, and most days the largest pod of spinner dolphins in Hawaii comes to rest in these same waters. I am still trying to learn the pattern of their arrival time. Nick gave some hints on how to approach these curious and social creatures so that they will play with you. (it’s a paralimbic lobe thing)

Also, this time of year, there are as many humpback whales in the waters as people on the island. Their spouts seem to go to the clouds.

  1. not so easy to lug the 5DMkII down here eh? 🙂

  2. Oh I have it here with me and have been shooting mainly with a polarizing filter. I’ll post some tomorrow… but I’m not taking it snorkeling!

  3. Pick up some frozen peas at the grocery store and put them in a baggy next time you head out for the reaf, but don;t tell your Dad. Take them into the reef with you. Then just take out a few, may 10-15 at a time, and set them loose in the water.

Fish confuse them with real fish eggs. All the fish around you will suddenly loose all fear, and you will have more than you can fit in your field of view!

  4. Peas?

    Happy New Year, Steve!

I always love seeing what new images and ideas you bring to your stream.
