I want to give it a try… At rocket weekends, I have always carried two cameras: the 5D with long lens for launches, and the G9 in pocket for everything else.
Swapping lenses in the desert (wide angle at night) has been a source of dust on the sensor… but now the Mark II vibrates that off. =)
I wonder if someone has figured out a shoulder harness so slinging two cameras feels like a balanced backpack? (I have not considered the 1D or heavier telephoto lenses because of weight…)
I’d want the 100-400mm on the 5D Mark II and the 16-35mm on the 5D. It would be cool to have the wide-angle for the pad shots pre-launch. Oh, and it will be tempting to shoot HD video now too…
That combo would be good for birdwatching too. Wildlife action and landscapes…
lucky you, I was waiting till after Christmas to buy mine, thought I should buy for others first. That rodent shot is great & not, I don’t like the face of the rodent facing me.
Steve, I just bought a 5D Mk II myself, upgrading from a 40D/50D. Based on your enthusiasm for the 100-400 zoom (vs the generally lukewarm received 28-200 — you’re not the first person to feel that way about that lens) I ordered the 100mm-400mm, a 50mm 1.2 and an 85mm 1.2.
Next time you’re going out to Black Rock, let me know, I’m in the area and I have my own mobile satellite internet enabled lodging/command post. 🙂

Jurvetson: the other links work great, but as you try to reach the 16-35mm link, it bring up the Singh-Ray note. Also where did you or your wife pick it up? I know were us right coasters would buy from, usually – b&h, adorama, 42nd street, etc.
did you get weights to build up the muscles for lifting this kit for home use? Enjoy! and I am now convinced more than before that you need to diversify your portfolio and head to the real Bush in Southern Africa so we can compare some shots upon your return. P.s. they also do rocket testing out in the Kalahari Desert!
I’m always glad to see the Canon 100-400mm praised; I’ve been in love with this lens for a whole year now… it’s very heavy but oh sooo worth it. We use it for most of our bird shots (caught some wild NeNe geese on Maui last week!). All the sealed L-series lenses from Canon totally rock, but this guy is my favorite. I think I lust more for the bag than the lenses however – my current bag is just not cutting it.
How is your ‘carry on’ hand baggage size checked in the states? UK (budget at least) airlines have a box into which your baggage must fit (55x40x20cm IIRC) – the better LowePro bags all seem to be rather deeper than 20cm. Not to mention prices which make designer ladies handbags look like value for money!
Are the focus points in the 5Dmk2 really clustered in the center? I haven’t found one to play with yet. If they are, that’s a deal-breaker for me.
I had the 100-400 for the last two weeks, and found it lighter than it looks. It’s very usable. The problem I ran into was having to manually focus when using extenders (1.4x and 2x) which I can’t seem to do right. Another problem is the attention it attracts due to its size but that can’t be helped. It’s excellent by itself though so I’m still considering it.
astonishing Equipment!!!! as everybody says: I wish i had it all for me!!! LOL congrats!
Hi good afternoon.
I write from Mexico to congratulate you on your pictures of birds really are magnificent.
I see that your collection of telephoto lenses have a mirror, your experience I can recommend particular model or brand?
See you soon!
I need know what is the model of that bag? I am looking forward to your answers. I do not think so sharad2020,I think is another but i do not know it
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/eldrothesp] I have a feeling it’s that one. He’s just taken all the inner pads and placed ’em the way he wants. Simple! I have the same bag.
