  1. damn… wish i had the money to order it right now. if i could find it in stock.

  2. wish I had the talent to make good use of that gear!!

  3. and you still had a camera (Canon PowerShot SD870 IS) to take this picture? 😉

Are you going to still use your old 5D? I guess changing cameras is faster than changing lenses but carrying both of them is maybe too heavy!

    merry xmas!

  4. I want to give it a try… At rocket weekends, I have always carried two cameras: the 5D with long lens for launches, and the G9 in pocket for everything else.

Swapping lenses in the desert (wide angle at night) has been a source of dust on the sensor… but now the Mark II vibrates that off. =)

I wonder if someone has figured out a shoulder harness so slinging two cameras feels like a balanced backpack? (I have not considered the 1D or heavier telephoto lenses because of weight…)

I’d want the 100-400mm on the 5D Mark II and the 16-35mm on the 5D. It would be cool to have the wide-angle for the pad shots pre-launch. Oh, and it will be tempting to shoot HD video now too…

That combo would be good for birdwatching too. Wildlife action and landscapes…

  5. oooof! nicely itemised.

is that a Lowe Alpine / Kata rucksack, or some other brand entirely?

i know it’s wrong, but i have acute lens envy…

  6. Yes, a big Lowepro backpack. It can pack all of this gear and a 17" Mac… and still fit in the overhead bin of a plane.

  7. ohhh…Nice rig! Congrats on the Mark II….I’ve been dreaming of one =)

  8. So *that’s* what you get when money is not a limiting factor. The 100-400mm is also good for birds that let you get close.

  9. Oh, yes… That was the lens that made the rodent popper shot possible:

  10. Oh, good, Santa stopped by your home on Christmas!

  11. lucky you, I was waiting till after Christmas to buy mine, thought I should buy for others first. That rodent shot is great & not, I don’t like the face of the rodent facing me.

  12. what the link for the 16-35mm lens? I can’t click on it. need a 2nd mouse

  13. Steve, I just bought a 5D Mk II myself, upgrading from a 40D/50D. Based on your enthusiasm for the 100-400 zoom (vs the generally lukewarm received 28-200 — you’re not the first person to feel that way about that lens) I ordered the 100mm-400mm, a 50mm 1.2 and an 85mm 1.2.

Next time you’re going out to Black Rock, let me know, I’m in the area and I have my own mobile satellite internet enabled lodging/command post. 🙂

  14. Gone-Walkabout: It is a link to shots taken with that lens. Does the link work here in the comment? Are the other links above not working…

    Mimosa – yeah, I was worried. =)

  15. Jurvetson: the other links work great, but as you try to reach the 16-35mm link, it bring up the Singh-Ray note. Also where did you or your wife pick it up? I know were us right coasters would buy from, usually – b&h, adorama, 42nd street, etc.

  16. she went to the local Ritz camera, and they had to order it..

I see it advertised on Amazon’s home page…

  17. I predict good things from this bundle of fun.
    ‘-}

  18. thanks for fixing the note, plus ordered mine today

  19. Ah yes, Ritz on Santa Cruz Ave. My shoulder aches looking at your load.

  20. did you get weights to build up the muscles for lifting this kit for home use? Enjoy! and I am now convinced more than before that you need to diversify your portfolio and head to the real Bush in Southern Africa so we can compare some shots upon your return. P.s. they also do rocket testing out in the Kalahari Desert!

  21. 100-400 is a nice lens

  22. i hope you’re good to your sherpa on your trips. ;0]]

  23. oops the remote trigger note doesn’t allow me to click the links either

  24. I’m always glad to see the Canon 100-400mm praised; I’ve been in love with this lens for a whole year now… it’s very heavy but oh sooo worth it. We use it for most of our bird shots (caught some wild NeNe geese on Maui last week!). All the sealed L-series lenses from Canon totally rock, but this guy is my favorite. I think I lust more for the bag than the lenses however – my current bag is just not cutting it.

  25. How is your ‘carry on’ hand baggage size checked in the states? UK (budget at least) airlines have a box into which your baggage must fit (55x40x20cm IIRC) – the better LowePro bags all seem to be rather deeper than 20cm. Not to mention prices which make designer ladies handbags look like value for money!

  26. Are the focus points in the 5Dmk2 really clustered in the center? I haven’t found one to play with yet. If they are, that’s a deal-breaker for me.

I had the 100-400 for the last two weeks, and found it lighter than it looks. It’s very usable. The problem I ran into was having to manually focus when using extenders (1.4x and 2x) which I can’t seem to do right. Another problem is the attention it attracts due to its size but that can’t be helped. It’s excellent by itself though so I’m still considering it.

  27. I have not noticed a difference in the focus points… nicely spread out. It may be larger, but it still feels quite light (more important IMHO)

  28. can’t wait to see photos form this!

  29. I’m now rating the 100-400 over 70-200 even though it’s slower
have tryed the 500 was far too heavy and did not give results

  30. what a great pack of gear.
    am all envy now 😛

  31. astonishing Equipment!!!! as everybody says: I wish i had it all for me!!! LOL congrats!

  32. What bag is holding all that stuff ?

  33. CAn you comment on the tamron with the 5d? Is it a keeper?

  34. Yeah, it’s a good travel lens – small, versatile 28-300, and lightweight.

    Ludovic: it’s a Lowepro bag.

  35. OMG. this is like my dream collection =)

  36. Hi good afternoon.
I write from Mexico to congratulate you on your pictures of birds really are magnificent.
I see that your collection of telephoto lenses have a mirror, your experience I can recommend particular model or brand?
    See you soon!

  37. I don’t recommend the mirror telephoto lenses that I have tried. I still like the Canon 100-400, and I have just started testing it with the latest 2x extender and am happy with that as well (so much cheaper and lighter than a Canon 800mm, and yes, with some tradeoffs)

  38. I need know what is the model of that bag? I am looking forward to your answers.

  39. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/eldrothesp] looks like a lowepro 350aw

  40. I need know what is the model of that bag? I am looking forward to your answers. I do not think so sharad2020,I think is another but i do not know it

  41. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/eldrothesp] I have a feeling it’s that one. He’s just taken all the inner pads and placed ’em the way he wants. Simple! I have the same bag.

  42. Close, it’s a Lowepro Vertex 300 AW

  43. Thank you for the answers, sorry for the confusion. That was not my intention.

  44. Wow! Amazing collection Lenses…
