Our hearts were racing as we heard the radio broadcast of the countdown from the launch control officer thousands of feet away…

195 lbs of custom rocketry roared off the pad, with all five motors blazing.

Vern had a perfect flight. She flew straight as an arrow and softly deployed the massive parachutes at apogee.

  1. Well, at least this one was a great success! It must feel good, even when it belongs to others.

  2. Oh man, looking forward to the video link. Please?

  3. what? no 3 stages? =)

  4. Looks impressive…wow

  5. Perfect timing on this shot – what a beauty she is too.

  6. That’s some hobby – do you need clearance from the FAA and NASA???

  7. yes! An awesome hobby

In this case, the launch organizers secured a prior waiver from the FAA to launch to 50K ft. Not NASA yet, but the projects in the desert going beyond 100K ft. will engage another layer of regulation. The Tripoli and NAR associations certify flyers of mid and high power rockets (written tests and proctored builds to demonstrate safety knowledge, Level 1-3, which I just completed this summer) and ATF recently inserted itself into the regulation of who can buy and store large amounts of propellant.

  8. This Rocket flew on four AMW L777 White Wolf and central AT/RCS M1850 White Lightning.

  9. Yes, I just heard from the earlier LDRS XX Russian N1 project that they were hoping to drag race the Saturn V in MoonRace 2001… Both were 1/16 scale…. Alas, the Russians got there first… And WOW, what a project, 3 stages and 43 motors:

  12. Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Apollo 11 40th Anniversary Celebrations Around the World, and we’d love to have this added to the group!

  13. heh, I just learned that this photo was used in 2015, in the "100 Inventions that Changed the World" special edition magazine from Popular Science. I guess they did not realize it was not a real Saturn V launch!
