I finished a conference call and turned to a string of luminous pearls encircling the hilltop villa…

I am surprised by some of the images from the cell phone camera, which lacks any moving parts.

Later this year, MEMS technology (tiny silicon actuators and components made with a semi fab) will bring optical focus, shutter and then optical zoom to these pencil-eraser-sized cameras…

Sometimes smaller is better, as the MEMS autofocus can be as fast as the human eye, allowing for instaneous and continuous spot focusing. It’s quite a sight when you pan the camera from foreground to background elements and the focus snaps into place instantly, just like our natural visual perception…

Oops, a geek digression from the beauty of the moment…
