“Look, up in the sky. It’s a bird. It’s a plane…”

“To even mention all the things the bird must constantly keep in mind in order to fly securely through the air would take a considerable part of the evening… The bird has learned this art of equilibrium, and learned it so thoroughly that its skill is not apparent to our sight. We only learn to appreciate it when we try to imitate it.”
– Wilbur Wright

Pocket cameras sure have come a long way. This is a hand-held snapshot straight up.

The rodent poppers are a bit more graphic…

  10. Good catch on PF song! It was immediate the connection. In the movie there´s no lil boy saying that phrase -yet it´s heard-, at that moment there´s Pinky´s mother and a baby´s car -him- at the backyard in the afternoon and the camera opens the frame and points to the blue sky where a black bird flies away. Then the film turns to cartoon and the bird turns to eagle… which finally turns to a steal plane…

This was like the compressed version of all that. |-)

    da-ve asks:

How did you get the light under the bird? All the ones I take end up with just an outline of the bird as it it always backlit!

Ah, yes, this is quite tricky. The under-wing lighting is best achieved with a searchlight. They are available with a trailer hitch and diesel generator. The key is to hook up a wireless flash trigger so that the light and generator sounds won’t disturb the birds as you sneak up on them.

On a fine day like this, I should share her full story. It is quite remarkable. There was a glorious hawk that survived from the Cro-Magnon epoch (a rare genetic mutation kept her telomeres from getting snipped, and so she does not age)…. She had the most resplendent plumage, like a mural in the sky. Throughout the ages, she would swoop down whenever someone needed inspiration… tantalizingly close… perched motionless in the sky, as if painted in place… Native Americans worshiped her. Wilbur Wright found his muse. And then, like a mysterious alien craft, she would lift up and away with consummate grace… leaving an empty space in the canvas of the sky. But each year, she would return to renew the awe of the attentive…

  25. Just came across this photo by accident and re-read your "kind of like Le petit prince story. Really like it.

You should try making a children book one day. Mixing your curiosity for science technology and the world, with you imagination and way of telling story…could be "un tres beau melange".

  26. Stunning photo! I love hawks! Hopefully, one day I’ll be able to find one of their red tail feathers.
