After lambasting the fatalism of nuclear war and the futility of FEMA and Civil Defense during the Cold War, Dr. Irwin Redlener, President of the Children’s Health Fund, gives helpful pointers for surviving a suitcase nuke.

Bullet point one can save your vision and keep your head from exploding.

If you find yourself 2+ miles from a blast, you have 10-20 minutes before the radiation cloud drops. If you can travel 1.2 miles upwind during that time, you should be OK.

The Cokes on the podium show the size needed for a simple 10 kiloton nuke. 84 Russian suitcase nukes are missing.

“Nuclear terrorism is inevitable. But for most, it is survivable.”

  1. Crazy stuff… Quick question though – the slide says move downwind or crosswind. Upwind, as you mention, seems to make sense.

Seen in my contacts’ photos. (?)

  2. Ack! What a unfortunate typo. Definitely upwind. He mentioned cross-wind in case you were unsure of where the blast was; moving orthogonal to the wind would get you out of harm’s way in any case.

I figure this post is a brief flickr PSA… =)

  3. The Coke cans is a scary but vivid example of the threat that is out there. Uhhg.

  4. TED is awesome. I liked this talk a lot.
