“Mavericks is a world-renowned big wave break located one-half mile off the coast of Half Moon Bay, California. In 1975, Jeff Clark became the first person to ever surf Mavericks. For the next 15 years, he surfed there alone as no one else dared to tackle what is today considered one of the most challenging waves in the world. Many believe this 15 year solo effort to be one of the great feats in surfing history… By the early 1990s, word of Jeff’s adventures began to spread, and since then Mavericks has moved into the foreground of modern big-wave surfing, attracting the most elite riders to test its limits each time it breaks. These riders are presented with waves that have crested at over 50 feet, remarkably strong currents, dangerously jagged rocks and shallow reefs, and frigid water temperatures. In summary, Mavericks is like no other place on the planet.” (contest site)

  1. haha, why am I not surprised you came to Mavericks and got in a helicopter!

But as usual, great shot! Right and left!

  2. A really nice shot!

I once saw a documentary about surfing huge waves all over the world and it included the story of this place and the man who was the first to surf there. Fascinating! These are courageous people who love danger.

  3. beautiful day for it (and which of my Flickr contacts was NOT in the water or up on the bluff that day!). I have a stream full of amazing photos !

  5. Jesus Christ, I’d be afraid to get near that thing in a boat! If I’m ever seen near Mav’s, I’ll be in a chopper too!

  6. I think I would be more terrified of the sharks up there. . .but I am illogical like that. 🙂

    Great Capture.

  7. Holee! The people really give this some scale. Wow!

  10. A fantastic action shot, brilliant.

  11. Amazing. If the boats weren’t there you’d never guess at the sheer size of the wave. Brilliant shot. Scary and magnificent.
