A perfect launch of my Telstar Logistics / LOC Precision V2.0 with the biggest motor possible, an L730 imported from Cesaroni, a Canadian aerospace & defense company. Their unique thermoplastic propellant burns cleanly, showing multiple shock diamonds.

In the foreground is a videocam on tripod for scale. Black Rock is in the distance. Best viewed large.

But this beautiful flight proved to be a swan song….

  1. wow neat! ive never seen anything like this before thanks for sharing it on flickr this is really neat the whole smoke trail from the lift off way cool!

  2. Oh no! The V2 comes to an end!

But what did you expect? Build a missile, and it wants to go out with a bang. The import thing is that you got good pictures.

  3. Oh also, did the video camera catch the end? (Sorry, I am a havoc voyeur)

  4. My favorite rocket design…

    Yup. (shakes head)

Men… They start tinkering with rocketry, and the next thing you know, they’re launching "Vergeltungswaffe Zwei" lookalikes following ballistic terminal trajectories and carrying a [hygroscopic] explosive payload… ;-0

  6. I am trying to track down the video… If I can get it, I will post it. I especially want to hear the sound again…

(the running camera may even capture the sound of reentry… =)

  7. Your life is far more interesting than mine

  8. Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Cartel * ( B/Y/G ) – Blue or Yellow or Green ( No Red ), and we’d love to have your photo added to the group.

  9. Very cool. I was into model rocketry as a child.

  10. WOW! What an exciting moment!

  11. don’t know if you’ve seen this video of a rocket filmed in slow motion steve, but thought you might find it interesting…

  12. I had not seen that… thanks nels1

  13. pleasure…’tis the beauty of the interweb:)

  15. I love that one! I think it might be better without the tripod though. Still a great shot.

  16. thanks y’all

joshme17: from a lot of rocket shots in the desert, I find that without some foreground element, it’s really hard to make out the scale…. Is it an Estes rocket or a scale V2?

Sparkle_fish: regarding you note, I am curious. Deliberate… like, its point ing too low… and would be cool with a wide-angle pan shot?

I checked the original size, and I mainly see a silhouette… But the playa chunks look dramatic!

Ooops, sorry, to me it looked as though the camera on the tripod was pointing away from the action, I guess I was wrong. Would have been funny though, please delete the note.

Still a damned fine action shot, bags of movement & energy.

  18. great it reminds me of german V2 rockets back in world war 2

  19. (Hi, I’ve chosen your photo for the competition of the week at Scientist Photographers group, you can follow the scoring in the discussion section of our group! Good Luck!)

  20. "Our main goal for a long time [developing the V2] was to make it more dangerous to be in the target area than to be part of the test crew."
    – Wernher von Braun

Flying them, you start to see what he means…

  21. ProXX classic can be a bit underwhelming in the smaller motors, but the 54/75/98s are really nice. Great shot.

  22. dude! that’s a sweet shot!

  23. Just got a cool link from my friends at Sea Launch:

ROC had a “mass V-2 launch… many a V-2 had met their untimely end here."

    http://www.v2curse.org

The video page is pretty sweet (start from the bottom for the best ones…)

  24. Oooh, and then there are always larger projects…. with a similar outcomes…. and with an automobile as the payload! Crazy Brits

  25. forgot to mention, this photo made it to the cover of

    Double Whammy
