I learned the hard way that gunpowder is hygroscopic.

The L730 motor performed perfectly. The V2.0 flew straight as an arrow as per the flight plan. The onboard computer detected apogee and ignited the black powder (BP) charge that is needed to separate the nose cone from the body and deploy the parachute. But the BP did not fully ignite. In the post-mortem, we found the partially ignited BP sack. My BP storage container was not airtight, and over the past year, the BP absorbed water from the atmosphere, ruining its efficacy. The rocket launch in the desert was foiled by water.

So, the 28 lb rocket made a sickening arc through the sky and started picking up speed as it came back ballistic, howling back to the playa and drilling into the clay with great force.

  1. Sorry to see that Steve. That was a beautiful rocket.

  2. Oy. Sorry Steve.

    Gravity is a harsh mistress.

  3. bummer…but a very interesting post-mortem analysis!

  4. Maaaan! That’s a bummer. Lessons don’t come cheap in this sport! But at least they’re pretty dramatic.

  5. Yeah, bummer! I think I’ll stick to the roll of observer for these.

  6. Sorry to hear about it turning into a lawn dart… but you got some great photos and the experience was awesome.

  7. “One puzzling feature of the V-2 arrival was on a clear day, a descending vapor trail was clearly visible in the sky, and the first explosion occurred several thousand feet above the ground. This explosion appeared to be the rocket casing as hundreds of pieces of debris could be seen seemingly fluttering to the ground above the point of impact. I have never heard an official explanation of this phenomenon in the years since. All this, of course, was only seen after the warhead explosion alerted one to its arrival.”

sorry for your loss, it was such a fine looking rocket!

  8. education – what fun!

  9. If you are going to loose a rocket, that is the way to do it. Make it a truly catastrophic failure =)

    2.0 is dead…long live V 3.0 !!!

  10. I’m having a Hindenberg moment.

  11. Ouch. I’m starting to think building a scale V2 is asking for trouble – they just love to recreate the original flight profile.

    See video here: http://www.ears.org.uk/gallery/movies.shtml

  12. Ouch is right! That 4th video of the V2 looks, and sounds, so very familiar…. =)
