When I was growing up in Dallas, I loved to explore the maze of storm sewers running around the neighborhood.

It’s been a while…. But then I remembered, I have been in the sewers of Los Gatos before. Back in college, our team had to go there, among other crazy places, to win the Bay Area Race Fantastique, or B.A.R.F. for short. It was all part of The Game, an all-night event that is seared in my memory.

  1. Oooh this is deliciously groovy! love those circles! And that Game sounds like fun! Is it like a scavenger hunt?

  2. Exactly… but on a crazy over-the-top scale. TV crews followed some teams.

The lighting for this shot was so cool. I did not use a flash. Normally for tunnel shots, the foreground and background are at an extreme brightness contrast. But here, I have a storm grating over my head letting in just enough light to balance out the whole tunnel. I was just happy to find a camera in my pocket.

  3. Odd recreation; Kudos on the terrific image.

  7. I did a bit of spelunking at Texas A&M… great fun!
I really like this shot Steve. It would be a great addition to the Vanishing Points Group.

  8. Very cool idea. I like it.

  9. oh! this is absolutely amazing!!!!

  10. Yay tunnels! Good ones to explore as a kid in Santa Barbara, too…

  11. A very exciting image!!! The geometry, the circles, the seemingly black and white effect, the small human form and shadow (ha, ha), all makes it a truly exceptional photo. I love it!

  12. Awesome shot!

My friends and I also used to explore some drainage pipes in our Columbus, Ohio neighborhood when I was a kid. One of them even curved when it ran underneath Interstate 71. Once you were outside the range of the entrance and exit, it was the darkest black I think I’ve ever seen (or not as the case may be).

For most of us, it was our first independent foray out of the neighborhood.

  13. holy cow — I’m somewhat claustrophobic, so don’t think I’d ever participate in The Game — but this is a terrific image to illustrate the concept of claustrophobia! (take it from one who knows.)

  14. This one is just great.

  15. This is a pretty unique shot… I like the circles.

  18. How sad am I? I just spent a happy minute scrolling the photo up and down to watch the optical illusion of movement. Great photo.

  19. Nice shot — Paying such close attention to your lightning is a great habit (one I should practice).

Fun story with "The Game," reminds me of the Weird Science movie and the steam tunnels that ran the fibre cable under the campus at UC-Boulder
