This bird had a buddy who was agitated by my macro photoshoot. He first tried to distract me, and then ran up and nudged this bird to get her to stop posing for the camera.

Anyone know the species or gender?

  1. Wonderful close-up! He’s posing. 😉

  2. Funny story! It seems that even birds are camera shy or posers.

I saw your bird eye close-up today as I searched in Wikepedia for info on the eye. I knew about it being used there but it was still a little surprise!

Seen on your photo stream. (?)

  3. It’s the common sparrow

    Added a couple tags…

  4. No, not a sparrow. It’s a thrush, probably a Swainsons thrush, or perhaps the less common gray-cheeked thrush (if the throat is white rather than the brownish tan it appears to be).

  5. A hermit thrush gets my vote.
    Gender-?

  6. the real intrigue is in the varying interpretations of what it actually is! i vote thrush too.

i’m interested to know if you were walking around dressed as a massive tuft of grass, with a beak, legs and feathers glued to your PowerShot? 🙂

either that or the bird has unwittingly eaten a lancet fluke, a T Gondii sandwich or a fertiliser-infused Caddyshack worm, in which case s/he is clearly in reckless adopt-a-Jurvetson mode…

  7. I go for the A380 species… an Airbus, unmistakably. That belly has room for 555 seats -maybe more-.

ps: And you know? I think s/he was not posing… she was actually unable to take off! Those wings can´t make that belly fly, no matter how fast you may flap’em, sorry. 😀

  8. Not a sparrow – that’s not a sparrow beak. I vote thrush and take back my wren endorsement. I also second the airbus motion.

  9. Wonderful closeup………excellent capture.

Seen in the QEMD "Finch" Group

  10. I think your mystery bird must be a type of thrush, not a sparrow. To get a more definite ID you can post your image to this discussion topic of the Field Guide: Birds of the World group. There is also the ID Please group.

  11. BTW……..This photo was chosen as a fave in the "Best Viewed on Large" {Part 2} – of the QEMD "Finch" group.

    Congratulations, Steve

  12. cool closeup! pretty fearless for such a small bird to come that close to the camera.

That definitely seems like a hermit thrush.

check out this link for an example of their song

  13. I have faved and tagged your picture with BRAVO and this serves as an invitation to The Best: BRAVO.

  14. Downloaded the large size!
    Funny story too!

  15. The bird is a Hermit thrush. This is the "brown thrush with spots" we have in California in the winter, barring fluke rarities. You see some of the diagnostic rustiness on the wings and tail. The Swainson’s is a summer bird only (while the Hermit breeds up in the mountains, which is where it sings its amazing song).

That said, what an amazing photo! I know that sometimes shy birds surprise us by acting very bold and tame, but I am amazed by what this bird apparently did. I would love to know how this picture was taken.

  16. Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Fantastic Bird shots, and we’d love to have your photo added to the group.
