  1. Almost doesn’t look real…well done.

  2. Where is this – looks like my hometown (Victoria, BC).

  3. how the **** did you do that???

  4. Ceci n’est pas Photoshop.

    Thanks y’all.

Stewart – must be ambassadors paying a visit from BC. The photo is closer to your new home: Shoreline Park in Mountain View. Over the hilltop is the Bay, nestled in low clouds, ever dreamy.

Blamski & Jase: It was a hand-held panning shot with a 400m IS lens at f11. IS helped get a crisp shot (the feathers are easier to see in the large size), and the perspective compression is one of my favorite effects of a long lens (here is a more extreme experiment showing this effect).

    I was watching them for a while…

    Good for the Gander

and noticed a common flight path for inbound arrivals and outbound departures, so I could position myself for a predictable shot.

    O Canada

Like a jumbo jet, these large birds do not climb very rapidly, so they trace a nice path for a side view near the ground.

  5. This is a good example of what results we get in life when we pay attention to what is happening around us. You studied the geese’s habits, waited and voilà, a fantastic shot!

Cette photo de bernaches est très belle et très réussie.

  6. Great capture of the canadian goose…..more often than not they are on land so good catch here!

  7. Wow! This is quite a catch. Instant fave 🙂

  11. so is this a composite image or not? I don’t read French. If it is, as you say, a panning shot, then I don’t get it. Panning, by definition and practice, requires swinging the camera at basically the same rate as the moving subject (in this case slow-flying geese) and if the camera is indeed in motion then any stationary foreground or background object (the bench) would be blurred regardless of the shutter speed unless it’s 1/2000 of a sec. or so. And if that’s the case, then why bother panning?

  12. Not a composite image. No Photoshop. The shot is 1/1000 sec.

Help me out if I am not precise in my use of the word panning (and I can’t read French much at all either =).

I am panning with the movement of the geese primarily to track them for composition reasons (not for motion blur artistry). I could not anticipate exactly where they would go, and I’m at 400mm of zoom, so it’s easier to follow their flight with the camera than to hope they fly in front of a static field of view.

Another reason to pan with a moving subject is to have more than one chance to get an interesting shot… especially with dynamic subjects, like birdies flapping their wings…

  13. fair enough, it’s just a matter of our definitions not being the same. No big deal and it explains why the static objects are relatively sharp too. the geese must’ve been really moving slowly at that point. Panning generally means using a slow enough shutter speed to stop the moving object because the camera is tracking at about the same speed yet blurring the background as a means to serparate the subject. Think of the Indy or NASCAR photos or the 100-meter-dash shots you see in Sports Illustrated or elsewhere. I covered 5 Indy 500 races and with a car that’s moving 200+ mph you can pan at 1/500 easily enough. Something like a footrace is done better at 1/125 or 1/60 or even slower depending on the level of blur one wants to achieve. Some of the best I’ve seen have just the runner’s face sharp and the rest of the body in motion. Myself? never pulled that off. Panning shots are de rigeur (French?) in sports photography and often in wildlife photograhy as well. But today, photographers who are unable to use the tool properly just do it with the software blur filters and such.

  14. very interesting! thanks.

I’ll have to try that with my kids running amok. 😉
