   yes, after a gentle inspection of the colorful underbelly, I remind the boy to set it free.

   This one was pretty mellow. I wonder if he had been in the catch and release program before…

   Don’t some animals sometimes become "tranquillized" in such circumstances? A fear reaction, out of self-protection.

   he’s full of blackberries!
   ….that’s not his natural pigmentation…that’s blackberry juice bleeding out of him!

   That looks like the exact same fella. So the males have the blue racing stripes…

   These are the lizards we have crawling all over the place. They tend to keep their bellies hidden from view….

    I think he is playing dead. When I’ve caught smaller lizards in the past they would often do that. And they really seem to enjoy belly rubs.

    Most likely it is a Western Fence Lizard. Occasionally one makes an unsuccessful dash in front of my car as I pull into my garage. Interestingly, I recently learned these little guys may be responsible for reducing the incidence of Lyme Disease in their territory (see sidebar in link).

    Emerald swifts always are so docile as long as you keep them on there backs. nice shot.
