Don’t some animals sometimes become "tranquillized" in such circumstances? A fear reaction, out of self-protection.

Most likely it is a Western Fence Lizard. Occasionally one makes an unsuccessful dash in front of my car as I pull into my garage. Interestingly, I recently learned these little guys may be responsible for reducing the incidence of Lyme Disease in their territory (see sidebar in link).
Smart guy! I always play dead when someone turns me upside down and inspects my belly …
