When I started posting photos on flickr, I never thought they’d be anything but curiosities…. geek stuff and macro shots of bugs.

I was happily surprised to see that 6 of my photos will be in a new Hawaii Travel Guide by Schmap. They use CC licensed photos from flickr to enhance their maps.

  1. Congrats! Very nice work. Makes me want to visit Hawaii. 🙂

  2. do they give you a cut of the money they make.. which i assume they do..?

  3. nope. Anyone is free to use my photos however they want as long as they give a photo credit.

  4. It makes a trip to Hawaii even more worthwhile!

    Congratulations!

Taking photos and showing them to people on line or in our private home is really a gift to others. We want to share what we have seen, wether in our backyard or on the other side of the world, because it is human nature to want to share with others what brought us joy. I am so happy that amateur photographers and travellers share their experiences and perspectives with us. Merci Steve.

  5. Wow, Steve! Congratulations.

  6. Congratulations! And I am so glad they picked that turtle photo – it’s one of my all-time favourites 🙂

  7. i’ve got to get to hawaii someday…
    :/

    kudos!

  8. nice job something done well is worth sharing.

  9. Congrats, Steve – that’s great news…and it doesn’t surprise me at all that they chose this fine lineup of images from you.

    WELL done, Sir….!

  10. how fabulous! they’re beautiful photos, and a great example of flickr/Creative Commons synchronicity! i dream of the day my photos should make such a leap… 🙂

  11. I got an email from them the other day and gave approval. I think it’s a great use of my photos that would otherwise be viewed by me and me only. It’s truly a great use of Flickr and the community, and I really like the way they handled it.

I do not, however, like their Windows-only crap 😉

  12. I just got picked up by these guys, but they didn’t give me a choice. I still don’t know how I feel about that. I sent them an email telling them that if they charge for the product I rescind all rights to my images. I also told them that if a Mac client doesn’t ship by Jan 1st 2007 that I will rescind those rights. Ain’t I a big old pain in the ass.

  13. oooh…. this gets interesting… I’m Mac-only too…. Bet a lot of CC flikrites are too. We could exert some collective influence here…

  14. mac users? commons? hardly!

oh, i’m a mac user too, and they just picked this one for their barcelona guide..

  15. Wow, almost 2 years ago!

Congratulations! I’m an admin for a group called "I Got Schmapped!", and we’d love to have you join our group and add your photo(s)! (Please tag your photo(s) "I Got Schmapped!" and feel free to add and tag your photos individually.)

  16. Mac users still are screwed by Schmap, which is why I had no choice but to yank all rights to my images. I won’t support them because they are simply unable to hold up their end of the bargain. Schmap does not, and apparently will never run on Macs.
