Flying back from Utah gave me a moment to go through some photos of Memorial Church. The Fisk Organ has 4,422 pipes of eclectic origin, making it the first instrument capable of properly reproducing all organ music from the 16th – 18th centuries.

  1. Yeah, but the big question is… does is support .OGG? Are those several centuries of music bound with DRM, even though they are public domain? 😉

  2. Cool.. what a colorful pipe organ. I got to watch this Fisk organ be built, slowly over many months. At one point they had huge piles of tubes for moving air around the organ. They said the tubes were made by VW for VW bugs.. and that they were made of something other than rubber (mostly paper?) that would last centuries without breaking down.

I also got to hear it played once by a student practicing.. the hall was dark with just a light on the organ console. He was playing some crazy, darkly baroque music, very loud. I was the only other person there at the time, gone to get something from the recording booth at the back of the hall. The student didn’t know I was there. I stayed to listen for a while. It was unforgetable!

Pipe organs like these make an amazing sound that just can’t be captured on recording gear, let alone played back through loudspeakers, without major loss. Gotta hear them live.

  3. Outstanding shot.

    Si beau et coloré!
    So beautiful and colourful!

I would love to see more views.

Although I am not a church going person, I do appreciate the atmosphere created in places of worship. This place is gorgeous and quite unusual. The style seems appropriate for the Spanish influence architecture of Stanford University. I would go there just to sit and let the music and the wonderful scenery invade my being. That would be a great spriritual experience!

  5. Here is the very old and famous Notre-Dame Basilica in Montréal (Old Montréal/Vieux Montréal) that looks green in these photos but is actually all deep sky blue and gold. Read about the organ (the English version is less detailed).
