I found this unknown goop in some Easter eggs. It’s just as cold, but less runny, than the green Slime I remember from childhood.

I discovered that this stuff dissolves Silly Putty. When I mix them, the Silly Putty becomes soft, and then stringy, and now smelly and very sticky. It adheres to paper and skin… The blob on my desk is starting to worry me a bit.

  1. When easter eggs attack

  2. It looks like an alien pod! I am thinking of a movie but the name escapes me for now. Something about pods that contain aliens.

  3. That is awesome! Very Hollywood special FX!

  4. you must have a terrible terrible cold.

  5. It gives new meaning to ‘cover your mouth when you sneeze’ doesn’t it?

  6. So then my surprise Easter egg reached you! Fast this Kosmic Postal Service.

And you liked the alien goop and all… Did good in sending it. Yey! 0-)

    😉

  7. Eeew, smelly. Very cool looking though. Is it still a non-newtonian mix with both the goop and silly putty?

Just be careful and don’t get it on your face, looks fatal to me!

  8. Great, and very unusual, shot!

Loving sec611’s comment above – nice!

  9. i remember the green slime came in a trash can like oscar was 5 inches tall

  10. Such inspired curiosity! To wonder what would happen if you mixed that goop with silly putty. Silly putty, I might add that you just happened to have on hand. ‘-}

  11. I just remembered that movie title:
The Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

This blob reminds me of the pods in which they grew.

  12. heh, heh…. Good memories and associations….

Mimosa: Alien, pod, egg, slime…. Funny you should mention it, but when the Silly Putty was in the stringy stage, it looked like the slimy egg pod membrane in the movie Alien

Ben: good idea to avoid the face… And we’ll need to seek a Silly Putty Expert to address your materials question….

  13. Oh! Remember that scene when sigourney weaver is face to face with the slimy buddy? 😉

Ey… Somebody is looking for an expert on the field? Ben?

I am a Silly Putty Master, graduate from the SPU. You can ask me… anything. 😛

  14. That’s got interestingness

  15. this is blowing my mind.

even though it looks like what comes out when i blow my nose.

  16. Oh, good, a silly putty expert!

Alieness, how fast do you suppose he needs to yank it in order to test it for silly hardening? Also, might a bounce test be sufficient? I suppose for full sillyness, a newsprint test should be included?

I should clarify that cheeks are probably ok, if you want to evoke emotion in those who see you, but eyes, nose and mouth, yah, as we both agree bad plan, probably.

  17. Definitely: DON´T put that on your face! Silly Putty holds no responsibility for injuries and intoxication due to mixung silly putty with other chemicals or materials. [the first lesson at university is this disclaimer ;-)]

Now, to understand better about the mix and its behaviour (and to infere the transparent slime´s components) it would be interesting that we knew the mixing ratio: How much transparent slime did you mix in how much silly putty, J?

(take on account that silly putty´s silly behaviour is based in the bonds -and bonds´ breaking- of its component molecules -basically hydrogen-)

  18. The pictured goo is the raw stuff, right? Not mixed with putty? (That’s quite a bit of goo, whichever way.)

Interesting about the bonds, G. I didn’t realize they were made and reformed as the putty was worked.

  19. Oh, yes, I think the photo is of the raw goo, without mixing. I just thought your questions were related to the behaviour of the resulting solution of silly putty and this goo here. As that was what Steve told to have become sticky smelly and such others eeewwww´s =S

For the bonds: "The polymers in silly putty have covalent bonds within the molecules, but hydrogen bonds between the molecules. The hydrogen bonds are easily broken. When small amounts of stress are slowly applied to the putty, only a few bonds are broken and the putty "flows". When larger amounts of stress are applied quickly, there are many hydrogen bonds that break, causing the putty to break or tear."

What is strange is that Steve describes a chain of changes in thing since he mixed them. It didn´t change once and stayed like that. Silly putty is inorganic, while this goo may have some organic component which had been activated -or boosted- and is causing this observable development on the thing (first soft then stringy, now smelly and sticky, etc…).

I´m no chesmistry expert, tho. Corrections and suggestions welcome.

Temperature as you know, plays a role too. And btw, I wouldn´t make a ‘bounceability’ test on the mixed thing, if has now become sticky. Specially if Steve´s floor is carpeted! =)

  20. Quelle expert! And an Alien too… =)

which sparks a great bonding reverie…

So many interesting phenomena in nature depend on weak bonds.

And yes, this goo is pre-mix with the Putty.

  21. Yah, I was curious about the mixture’s properties, but making sure I was clear on this substance shown here. Cool stuff. Let us know if it eats through the desk, Steve. 😀

  22. But it created a very cool shot! (123)

  23. woah so intense! 123

  24. as though you are rising from a slimy cocoon…

  25. Wonderful slimey textures! Love it!

  26. This is really cool! Great idea and wondeful shot!

  27. I’ll call vinkman. he’ll sort it out.

  28. @Sec611 if you can move your arm – that f-a-s-t? thinking of the speed of light-slime

  29. I think it looks like a fetus’ hand in the amniotic sac at about 36-37 weeks gestation

  30. Well done… very original !!!

  37. Looks like you were attacked by "THE BLOB". That movie scared me when I was kid. Had nightmares as I had just seen a newspaper article about a UFO that very day on the school bulletin board.

  38. ROTF!! O my gawd, what a funny story! Be careful with that Blob on your desk…

  39. Such an interesting image, so many possibilities…. 🙂 Thanks for sharing your image with our group!
