Through this door lies a new world…

When the storm finally broke, I found a portal on the beach for my first photo shoot with the new camera.

  8. a great shot! i spect you survive after that creammy splash,

  9. Sarchi & Da Man: It sure looks like I am about to get creamed, so to speak… But this is a shot that really took advantage of the new camera getup in every way (long lens, tripod, fast shots). I am actually a long distance from this off-shore rock formation. I’m glad Automatt posted the broader context. I am standing a bit farther back and to the right of where he was. I was using the 300mm lens on full 10x telephoto with the tripod. ISO 400 allowed for 1/200 second exposure to freeze the action (with reasonable DOF from a 6.3 aperture).

I got a new appreciation for the ‘reflex’ in SLR… With a visual twitch of action, I could fire off the shot without a lag.

And it was an anticipated shot, allowing for preparation. I saw another photographer set up there in advance, and he told me that he had been planning a shot there for over a year (he tried last year, and he had been there the prior three nights… He used his wedding anniversary as an excuse to drive 6 hours with his wife to revisit this location). He found the one time of the year where the sun sets directly behind this natural portal and coincides with a low tide (the beach is very flat here and high tide would have pushed us back a long distance).

Alieness: you have to put the outfit on…

Billy: yes… Casio Z55 is my favorite, but I don’t have that particular one right now…

  10. Well if you’re going to talk long metal there must more much more to that..

  11. congrats on the camera steve. It’ll come in handy when you photograph yourself with that item i’m hoping will reach you any day now :p
just be careful tossing it.. put a pillow underneath or something..
    hehe
    kidding.

but since im here, im gonna go ahead and wish you a happy new year, and much fun with your new toy. Since there’s already a 1D on the market now, i’ll just patiently wait until they make a 0.5D or something, and then i’ll be able to afford the 5D:p

  12. That is sooo cool! Grats on the new camera!

  13. …magic pouring towards the magician;)

  14. I tried closing my eyes, Sol, and also with the tinkerbell outfit on, J, but still nothing…

    Should I try latex? ¿:-/

  15. But of course. It’s very versatile.

Rebekka: really looking forward to it… merci.

Billy: the Kodak looks a lot like the Lumix:
    New Camera Arrival

You may want to compare it to the FX-9, which has fixed the battery life problem of the FX-7.

  16. are you so sure Tink that you aren’t already inside? This beautiful image could make you feel that way

  17. ah! that´s a good one. Because dressed up as Nikita it didn´t work either… 😛

Didn´t think of that possibility, Sol. Now that you mention, it can be… for at that ‘new world’ I fantasize to encounter at the other side, there is definitely you, my dear ones. But you here… uhm. I don´t know now if I wanna trespass it. =S

Will you STILL be there… here… wherever…! too? pliz? =)

  18. White chocolatey goodness. Or milk. Whichever you prefer.

  19. It is so beautiful. I can almost hear the smack of the waves.

I hope you’ll share this at Nature and Portals.

  20. Beautiful capture. I had to read some of the other comments to figure out waht it was that I was looking at!
