You’ve felt it your entire life, that there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there, like a splinter in your mind

  1. Is that one of the reconstructed areas? That seems to be in much better shape than wikipedia lets on.

  2. Ah… you feel the splinter…. =)

  3. Very cool looking nonetheless. MOre pix!

  4. …the guard house looks like a face and the extending arms, the walls, the lush green in between, all very welcoming,…it challenges the sensation of the comment, did you know?.

  5. The Matrix is constantly improving… It is trying to convince you that the splinter is the false memory of a decaying Great Wall.

  6. Soliton-aire: very good point… the comment jives better with some of the other photos perhaps….

In this case, the comment and title are hints that something is not quite right about this photo… I was not sure if it was subtle or obvious…. 😉

  7. Unless those are giant trees and bushes, the wall should look much taller (otherwise it’d be quite embarrasing that I got winded climbing the wall a few years ago!).

Is this some sort of mini-wall replica? Maybe a Chinese version of the mini-Brooklyn Bridge at New York, New York, Las Vegas? 😉

  8. complexify, I think you might be right. The scene seems too idyllic. At first I thought it was a reconstructed area of the wall, but maybe Steve is in a theme-park.

*Sleuthing* I have a pretty good idea where Steve is, the 108-hole golf course reference in a previous photo gives it away. According to the internets, the portions of the Great Wall built in Shandong are the oldest. It is unlikely the oldest portions of the wall are in such good repair.

I call shenanigans on your wall Steve.

  9. oddwick, good sleuthing too.

Just realized that there are clues in them thar’ tags. 🙂 e.g, "Splendid China":

Situated at Overseas Chinese Town in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Splendid China spreads over 450 mu of land. Its miniature scenic area, rich and comprehensive, is a most lively replica of China, reflecting long-standing history, brilliant culture, art and ancient architecture, as well as the customs and habits of 56 nationalities in China.

It is divided into a Scenic Spot Area and a Comprehensive Service Area. About a hundred scenic wonders are arranged in the Scenic Spot Area including the Great Wall, life-size Terra Cotta Figures of Soldiers and Horses of Qinling Mausoleum.

  10. I think those are bonsai.

  11. wall included, that is.

  12. Bingo Complexify, the neo Neo.

And yes, Alieness, those shrubberies have been trimmed to look like larger trees. You could jump over the wall.

It is hard to get a sense of scale here, but the blades of grass are normal sized.

It is odd seeing the grounds keepers and other scale-bending reminders of reality…
    China concentrate

  13. I remember talking to a pirate long ago in an email, about the wall and my impression as I first saw it when I was 9. I said: "of course I did understand nothing, but I got the feeling: something was very bad with the world…". We were talking about The Wall, the film, tho. +)

So, not only do they replicate foreign culture icons, but their own as well. Interesting. I feel like relating this to them being 1/2 the world´s population?
    Should I?

  14. I recognize this from Splendid China in Kissimmee. Been there many times, it’s a very enjoyable park.

I believe it went out of business a few years ago?
