Yup, it’s a bronze Butterfield.

The original driftwood was coated in ceramic and then burned away, leaving a mold for cast bronze.

  1. Wow. I just read the full description… amazing… They burned out the wood, then poured wax in slowly while rotating the entire assembly, to get a 3/16 in thick wax coating… so much work. I really want to see one now.

  2. There is a sculpture like this in the Museum of Art at the University of Utah.

  3. I wonder who thought up something like that in the first place. That’s big step from Ooog picking up a piece of charcoal and marking on the wall.

  4. I am very interested in this thing. So nice!

  5. When I saw this in person, I thought (naturally) "Wow, a stature of a horse executed in driftwood" and I had to fight the urge to touch it. When I learned that was a bronze, I wanted to touch it all the more. Luckily, there is a piece of bronze cast from a single piece of driftwood on display for visitors to touch, but the finish had worn off from all of the touching, so it looks like a lump of bronze.

I wonder if Butterfiled intended to make people think of the contrast between the two media (driftwood and bronze) and their common associations (craft from driftwood and art from bronze).

Or am I way off base here?

    Oh, nice capture, btw.
