The wall of pride at Cisco HQ.

The glass is a bit hazy because the entire surface can instantly switch from transparency to a huge computer display.

It is electrochromic glass (with a voltage-triggered color-changing thin film). It’s not like an LCD though. I snuck into the hot room behind the glass to find a large array of rear projectors mounted on the roof. The glass just goes from clear to white diffuser. It’s somewhat like the massive TV at Oak Ridge Nat’l Labs.

  1. Cool. Would also be good for Halo 2. 😉 Do you have a photo of what the surface looks like with an image projected on it?

  2. Neat. Funny how data centers quickly become showcases.

  3. "Hey, teacher… leave those bits alone!"

  4. funny. All in all, it’s just 10101010

complexify: no, unfortunately. It was a pretty clear image, like a rear projection TV. It was segmented into three major screen blocks spanning the width.

Ross: Yup…. proud showcases, like high-end stereos, supercomputers, and spaceships. It reminds me of that study of 1 day old boys. They are more interested in blinking lights than human faces.

  5. Sweet ! Wonder how much their light bill is, just in that room.

  6. I *LOVE* when folks really pimp out their data centers. Its hilarious and cool. Why NOT? Besides the obvious cost issues, but if you are established then GO for it! Big IT gear is plenty sexy.

To some. "Wide pipes save lives…."
